MISSOULA - Donald James Richardson, 60, of Missoula, died on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, of natural causes.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1950, to Maurice Richardson and Ruth (Boyer) Richardson of Missoula. Don grew up in the Orchard Homes area. He attended Hawthorn Grade School, Hellgate High School, and three years at the University of Montana and Missoula VoTech.

As a teenager, he worked side by side with his parents in the Orchard Homes Grocery, and three summers at the Forest Service on Mount, under his mentor, Richard Combest.

Dan was very fond of sports. He loved water skiing, racquetball, skiing and golf. He was rightly proud of a hole-in-one he sunk one season. A basketball hoop on his parents' patio was the official gathering place for Don and his friends for many years.

In 1976, Don married Cathy Hoeft. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, James and Josh. Unfortunately, at the young age of 37, Cathy passed away, leaving Don, with the help of his mother and family, to raise his young sons.

Wile raising his family, Don enjoyed being a delivery guy. He worked delivering for several Missoula companies, as well as his own milk route, and Bonnie Faye route.

Don was especially proud of his sons and their achievements. Jim and Josh live on the island of Maui in Hawaii where they jointly own an operate a deli and also a bistro. Trips to visit them were highlights of Don's life. There was a great deal of love between Don and his sons.

Don was devoted to his mother, she was his spiritual and emotional guide, and his best friend. When she passed away, he turned to her church to fill that gap in his life. Don considered the Unity congregation his second family.

Don was survived by his sons, James and Josh of Kihei, Hawaii; sister JoAnne Lowell (John) of Polson; brother Morrie Richardson (Carolyn) of Huson; sister-in-law Linda Thompson (Mike) of Ronan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
